Humanitarian Cultivates Legacy of Love

Tina Springer

Tina Springer of Tucson, Arizona, with African refugees

Tina Springer’s enduring love of Africa first took hold when she was just 10 years old. Now, after making more than 10 humanitarian trips to the continent, this Arizonan has decided to preserve her connection through a gift in her estate plan. Here, Tina shares her account of how she arrived at this important decision.

Sitting with my lawyer to fill out paperwork for my will, I gave thought to who most enriched my life these past decades, and who might benefit from my financial contribution. The answer to me was simple…the IRC.

I remember hearing about their fine work all over the world and eventually became a volunteer for the refugee resettlement department in the Tucson office. I was assigned to give guidance to refugees from Ethiopia and Sudan, spending most of my time assisting them with their relocation. Witnessing their challenges, difficult times, fear and successes was an eye-opening experience.

With IRC giving “a hand up” to each of them, they are now happy U.S. citizens who give back to their communities. Each has chosen a path: caregiver, airport employee, taxi driver, long-haul truck driver, and mechanic.

Thanks to my volunteering, I saw firsthand some of the wonderful work the IRC does. And I have been enriched as a person by partaking in this work and sharing my love. I believe in their worldwide mission and want to preserve it for future generations.
