A Legacy for the Dignity of Others

Debra Rosenberg and Joe BoydWhen you create a will, you gain peace of mind knowing that you’re protecting the important people in your life. You can also use your will to create a permanent testament to the values that have shaped who you are.

Debra Rosenberg and Joe Boyd from Chicago have found that through their will, they can continue to help refugees get the aid they need to survive, recover and regain control of their lives. Here, Debra shares how she and her husband arrived at this important decision.

“No one can control the circumstances of their birth, but we recognize just how lucky ours were.

My husband and I were fortunate to be born in the U.S. in the 1950’s when, if you were white and your parents college-educated, you could take for granted you’d have clean water, ample food, and the opportunity for a good education. You could assume there’d be access to health care, good jobs, the rule of law, and that you’d benefit from the growing belief in women’s rights and equality—simply due to the accident of where and when you were born.

That’s why we made a bequest in our estate plan to the IRC: while we were lucky, so many millions aren’t and there’s something just so wrong about that.

We believe all people deserve a country, a home, food, health care and dignity.”
